Bulgarian Fortress.
At our fourth stop in Bulgaria, a town called Veliko Tarnovo, we visited a large fortress up on a hill. To get there we walked through markets and streets for around 45 minutes. To get into the fortress, we had to walk along a stone path that led to the entrance.
The main attraction of the Fortress in the church, which is at the highest spot. It had been destroyed in the 14th century by a fire, then rebuilt. After that, it was destroyed once more by the Ottomans. This church is an Orthodox Christian church and is different from the Catholic churches in many ways. First of all, the head of a Catholic Church is the Pope while the Orthodox churches are led by Jesus. The Orthodox priests also must have beards!
The church wasn’t enormous but it was still tall and magnificent. Painting covered the walls and roof but there was something different about these paintings. They were not the same paintings that they have in normal Orthodox churches which makes this church unuseable! So it is not active.
This Fortress was very beautiful and had a great view of the whole town! I had a great time and the town is very pretty too.
