The Kaymakli underground city was built in Cappadocia for protection against the threat of war. It once housed over three thousand five hundred people. In the thirteen hundreds people moved into the caves to hide from the Arabs.
These people were christians and they added on some beautifully decorated and painted churches. There are over two hundred of these cities in Cappadocia and people still lived in them up to the twentieth century.
We only went twenty metres under the ground but it is actually fourty metres deep.
We first walked in to see what were seats carved out of the stone, but we did not know that just yet. We strode through the tunnels until we found one that was dark and they weren't using the light. We went in, but it was very scary. We had to use dads torch light!
We went through even more caves which were so interesting and cool, there were storage holes for food, steep steps that we kept slipping on and looooonnnggg tunnels that we had to crouch down in.
Finally, we wanted to go back. It was so dusty, but that didn’t stop us from having a good time!

Gosh Mila, that is such amazing history. Imagine living like that for so many generations. You are all so clever finding these amazing places. Turkiye is an ancient civilisation isn't it? Thank you for telling us about it. I think that is fascinating. Love Nana and Granddad.
