The Colosseum by Hazel

Early in the morning we all walked to an amitheatre called the Colosseum. When we got there, there were no more tickest left. The only thing we could do to go in was to get a tour. We had to wait for one hour and 20 mintues because we were there early. While we waited we walked around the Colosseum. We took a family photo.

Later, our tour instructor called us. He gave us head phones to wear so we could hear him better. It was very busy. First we went inside and around. Then we went up a layer. We passed models of the Colosseum. Then finally we went to the third layer. We looked down and saw a maze. There used to be a stage on top where the Gladiators fought. The girls and poor people were at the top watching the Gladiators. It was the biggest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire. The slaves built it. It took about eight to seven years to build.

Sadly it broke in an earthquake and a fire. The Colosseum lasted 100 years. After that homeless people used it for shelter for awhile and then they used it for a church. Now, they used it for tourists so that locals can get money.

I felt amazed by this beautiful structure. I loved the style and the patterns of the Colosseum and the size was incredible.

Well what a history the collosseum has and a very checkered one at that. Thanks for telling us about it Hazel. I am pleased you were able to take a tour as I'm sure you got more information that way.

Replying to

We need to plan ahead a bit more for Europe! The tour was overpriced and not great. But it was the only way to get in. We couldn’t go to Rome and not take them into the colesseum. Lesson learned

I can't possibly imagine how huge that is Rubes. Lovely photo of you. You must have felt quite overwhelmed by the size and architecture and I can tell by your writing that you also found it to be very beautiful. So many years and so many people, it is mind blowing.

Gosh Hazel. To go inside the Collosseum and hear all the history. I have never had the chance to do that. I am little bit jealous of all that you are seeing 😀. Thank you for everything you are sharing with us
